A Career Rooted in Connection: Steven Crain on Building Relationships and Supporting Small Businesses

Steven CrainWhether he realized it at the time or not, Steven Crain’s passion for helping small businesses began taking shape early in life. With a mother who owned a residential and commercial services business and a father who worked as a self‑employed general contractor, Steven had a first-hand look at both the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. Once his own career began to take form, he truly understood the complexities of owning and operating a business, those early experiences laid the foundation for a lasting commitment: helping entrepreneurs succeed.

A self‑described “numbers person,” Crain earned a Bachelor of Science in Managerial Economics from University of California, Davis. His enthusiasm for numbers and analytical background led him to pursue a role as a financial advisor after completing the Series 6 and Series 63 securities exams.

“I was 22 years old and giving retirement advice to people who had been working longer than I had been alive,” recalls Crain. “I was confident in my skills and the guidance I provided my clients, but the contrast between my age and my clients’ life experience was never lost on me. And so, I decided to take a professional pivot.”

Crain began his banking journey as a banker specializing in business banking—an experience that quickly deepened his affinity for small businesses and entrepreneurs. He was later promoted into bank management, a role he has held for nearly 15 years, including his entire eight‑year tenure at Bank of Marin.

Crain joined Bank of Marin in 2017 as the manager of its Roseville branch where he has a close‑knit team that has worked side by side from the very beginning. It’s a role he values for the opportunity it provides to coach, mentor, and develop his team.

“Jen, Katie, and I have worked and grown together as a team for the past eight years,” says Crain. “We’ve navigated the pandemic as a team, and that shared experience has strengthened our trust, collaboration, and commitment to one another and to our clients.”

For Crain, success has never been about transactions—it’s about people. “Developing relationships has been at the core of my career and the part I enjoy most,” says Crain. “From clients to my team members, I feel honored and privileged to truly understand them—to see the whole picture and help guide them toward growth and success. Those relationships have also allowed me to become a center of influence in my community, helping professionals and business owners alike build strong, trusted networks.”

Looking ahead, Crain sees no finish line—only opportunity. “I still have a lot of impact to make in Roseville,” he says. For him, that impact comes from continuing to build trusted relationships, supporting local businesses through every stage of growth, and investing in the people and partnerships that strengthen the community. He remains focused on what has always mattered most: helping people and businesses move forward with confidence.
