Origin of the Spirit of Marin Award

The Spirit of Marin Award recognizes the achievements and volunteer spirit of local businesses and business citizens as chosen by the Marin County Chambers of Commerce.

The Spirit Behind the Spirit of Marin Award

The Spirit of Marin Award was inspired by Dr. Jim Dawson, an organizer and director of Bank of Marin, who also gave back in many ways. His philosophy of life can best be explained by George Bernard Shaw’s “A Splendid Torch”, a poem which Jim kept on a scrap piece of paper in his wallet.

“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatsoever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake, Life is no “brief candle” for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations.”
